Necessary Baby Furniture (Choose What You Need & Don’t Need!)

Baby Routines, Pregnancy Life

Necessary Baby Furniture Featured Image: Choose What You Need and Don't Need

Every parent has some advice to give new parents about what furniture they should be buying for their new little addition. When I was pregnant I got some great recommendations and some not so great recommendations that ended up being a waste of my money. What I really wanted was advice on what exactly was the necessary baby furniture I would need, and what I wouldn’t need.

While advice on what your baby will need is great, it’s so important to keep in mind that necessary baby furniture will be based on where you live, how much space you have, how much you can afford, and the choices you make for your baby.

(Don’t have time to read this now? That’s ok! Save it to read for later by pinning it to your favorite Pinterest board by clicking here!)

When I was pregnant and trying to find what baby furniture I needed and didn’t need it was hard to find a list that worked for me. All baby furniture lists were either telling me items what I absolutely needed or didn’t need at all (with no real reason why). What I wanted was a master list of everything I could possibly need with the pros and cons of each item that could allow me to choose for myself what I needed. So, after my first baby, I made a master list myself and want to share it with you!

Crib

We chose a 4 in 1 Transitional crib so the crib can grow with my daughter!

Rank of Importance– Obviously, a crib is a necessary baby furniture item!

You have a couple options when it comes to your baby’s sleeping arrangements.

  • Some people chose to have their baby sleep with them in their room in a bassinet
  • Others chose to put their baby in a crib from the beginning

If you’re going for option 1 then you will need a bassinet for your room and a crib for when they transition out of the bassinet. If you choose to put your baby in an actual crib then you’ll need a crib right away.

Pro– it is a crib, a toddler bed, and then can transform into a full-size headboard and footer. We thought this would be the most cost efficient since we can use it for years to come as she gets older

Con– In order to use for the future, you have to keep it in good condition so it can last.

My husband and I chose to put Baby L in her crib from day one so we wanted to buy a crib that had great durability and was long lasting. Our bedrooms shared a wall and our doors were literally 3 inches away from each other so we chose to put our daughter in her own room in her crib from the day she got home from the hospital. Personally, this worked very well for us!

We purchased the: Fischer Price Transitional 4 in 1 Crib

Necessary Baby Furniture- Crib and Mattress

Crib Mattress

Rank of Importance– If you are using a crib for your newborn baby and not a bassinet than a crib mattress, out of a scale of 1 to 5, is a 5!

You want to make sure to get a mattress that is comfortable yet firm. It is advised that babies do not sleep on very soft surfaces due to SIDS. (I am not a doctor but I received this information from my pediatrician so be sure to ask a professional about the exact mattress that is recommended.) You also want to make sure that the mattress is waterproof!

We purchased the: Serta Sertapedic Fiber Core Crib and Toddler Mattress (Waterproof)

Bassinet

Rank of Importance– If you are not using a crib right away and choose to have your baby sleep in a bassinet in your room or their own room, then you will definitely need a bassinet.

I personally had a crib and a bassinet. I put the bassinet in the downstairs living room and had my daughter’s crib in her nursery. The bassinet actually came bundled with our stroller so it was not an added cost for us. The stroller we purchased actually had the option to attach the bassinet the stroller- it was VERY multifunctional. We purchased the UPPA Baby Vista Stroller (With Included Bassinet).

Pro– I enjoyed having the bassinet because I was able to put my baby to sleep anywhere that I set the bassinet up. It is also where my daughter slept when we stayed at my parent’s house during the first couple months of her life. It is A LOT more portable than a crib and a lot more comfortable than a pack and play.

Con– Though I liked the bassinet for her early stages, my daughter quickly outgrew the bassinet and it became rather useless.

Necessary Baby Furniture - Bassinet

Changing Table

Rank of Importance– on a scale from 1 to 5 I would say our changing table is a 4, for everyday baby necessities.

Pro– The changing table had 2 built-in shelves. I was able to use the bottom shelves of the changing table to organize her diapers and make organized baskets of her lotions, creams, diapers, wipes, socks, and onesies.

Con– It can take up a bit of space if you only have a small room to work with. Our daughter’s room was small but we decided to add the changing table because it was practical for us.

I know many people who say a changing table was absolutely unnecessary for them and was just a waste of space. For us, the changing table was super helpful! We had a changing table in Baby L’s nursery upstairs and one downstairs in the living room as well. But we used the changing station that came attached to her pack and play (this item is below). I wasn’t a fan of changing her on odd and ends surfaces. Of course, we were fine when we had to change her on a bed or couch when needed, but we loved having a designated place to change her in our house.

We purchased the: Child Craft Arched Top Changing Table with Pad

Don’t forget to get my “Necessary Baby Furniture Worksheet” with detailed baby furniture assessments to help you personally write out what you need and don’t need. Get the awesome FREE worksheet below!

Pack and Play with changing pad and sleeper

Rank of Importance– On a scale from 1 to 5 I would say this pack and play is a 4 for us, for everyday baby necessities.

Pro– The pack and play has a changing station attached to the top and right beside it was a bassinet insert as a sleeping station. It also has 2 organization pockets hanging from the changing station so you can store the diapers and wipes

When we had Baby L we lived in a 2 story duplex. So, for half of the day I was upstairs with the baby and the second half of the day, I would bring the baby downstairs. Because of this, I liked to have a second “set” of things downstairs of necessities so I didn’t have to keep running up and down the stairs with a newborn. We kept the pack and play in the living room (our floor plan is open so it connects through to the kitchen and dining area). The pack and play has a changing station attached to the top and right beside it was a bassinet insert as a sleeping station. This really helped me because I was able to change her and lay her down all in one area and didn’t have to run upstairs.

Con– It is quite big. If your house has a layout that allows you to access her changing table or crib without an issue then I could see how some parents can view this as unnecessary. Or if you have a bassinet and don’t need a changing station then you may not need this.

We purchased the: Graco Pack N’ Play Playard with Newborn Napperstation DLX

Swing/Rocker

Rank of Importance– On a scale from 1 to 5, I would say these items are a 3 for everyday baby necessities.

Pro– Baby L had borderline colic so having a swing/rocker really helped soothe her during her difficult days. It was also a safe place to put her in when I had to do dishes or run to the bathroom.

Con– It’s sort of a waste of space if you don’t feel like you need a device to “soothe” your baby. It can also be a potential sleep prop- meaning your baby get so used to being in there that they can’t sleep in anything else that isn’t rocking or vibrating.

We purchased the: Graco Simple Sway Baby Swing and the Fischer Price Deluxe Auto Rock N’ Play Sleeper with Smart Connect

The Fischer Price Deluxe Auto Rock N’ Play Sleeper with Smart Connect was a lifesaver! My daughter has a bit of colic for a couple weeks and this rocker was the only thing that would soothe her. It comes with a free app that allows you to turn it on without even touching it! It also has a bunch of sounds, music, and vibration. It was amazing!

Necessary Baby Furniture - Baby Glider

Glider

Rank of Importance– On a scale of 1 to 5 a glider for us was a 3. I do not think it is a necessity to all parents but it was definitely beneficial to us.

Pro– We really loved having a glider for Baby L. We still use it to this day and she is well over a year old. I used it for nursing her, bottle feeding, and soothing her. It also became a staple of where we read to her every day. We were blessed to be able to have a family member buy a glider for us.

Con– I can see how parents may feel like this item is unnecessary. It can also be quite expensive if you cannot afford another piece of baby furniture. A glider can also take up space but you can find ones that are space saving.

We purchased the: DaVinci Upholstered Swivel Glider with Bonus Ottoman

High Chair

Rank of Importance– A high chair is not necessary before your baby starts to eat solids but once your baby begins solids a high chair is definitely a necessary baby furniture item.

There is a countless amount of options for high chairs these days, including a full high chair that has multi-functions such as reclining, detaching, and so much more, or you can buy a basic high chair for much cheaper. You can also purchase a high chair seat which is just a tabletop seat that can be placed anywhere you want your baby to eat! The options are endless!

We purchased the: Graco Duo Diner 3-in1 Convertible High Chair

 Necessary Baby Furniture - Dresser

Dresser/Storage Area

Rank of Importance– Having a storage is or dresser area to store your baby’s clothes and personal items is a must!

Your Options: You can choose to use bins for shelves or a closet with a combination of hangers and shelves. Or you can choose to purchase a full dresser with a bunch of drawers. Remember, think of your space and plan accordingly. My daughter’s room was not large at all so we used a combination of shelves in her closet, a small rack for hangers, and utilized the shelves under her changing table for storage bins. The possibilities are endless! Be sure to research an intuitive nursery/baby organization system and you will find a bunch of resources!

Talk to your spouse about what you will actually need, what you can afford, and how much space you have. This list was designed to help YOU choose what you will need and won’t need for your new little addition to the family. Ask your friends and relatives what they really used and what was a waste. What to Expect on Your First Prenatal Appointment

Pregnancy Life

First Prenatal Appointment | What to Expect at your OBGYN | First Trimester | Pregnancy | #pregnant #ultrasound #mom

Inside: Nervous about your first prenatal appointment? Don’t be! Remember, it is important to go to the doctor to ensure the health of you and your new little one.

Getting butterflies in your stomach after seeing those 2 little pink lines is one of the best feelings in the world!

I’m a “fear of the unknown” type of person so after taking my pregnancy test, my mind started racing a million miles an hour. And if you’re anything like me, then you probably want to find out as much information as possible about what the next steps are.

One of the most important first things you do, after you find out you’re pregnant, is to schedule an appointment with your OBGYN (Obstetrician).

Side note: Some women choose to have midwives so don’t feel boxed into what others are doing if you feel you want to do something else.

For me, this was a very scary thing.

Let’s just say I’m not the best with doctors and being probed.

I knew that the health and safety of this precious baby in me was always going to be my first priority so I wanted to make sure the baby was growing healthily and to do that I needed to go to the doctor.

Remember, it is important to go to the doctor to ensure the health of you and your new little one.

Here are 10 things you can expect on your first prenatal appointment:

  1. Paperwork
  2. Company
  3. Blood work
  4. Urine sample
  5. physical exam
  6. Due date
  7. Scheduling
  8.  Sonogram
  9. Encouragement

9 Things to Expect on Your First Prenatal Appointment

9 things you need to know on your first prenatal appointment

1. Paperwork

You will definitely be filling out paperwork at your first prenatal appointment. If you are a new patient or even a returning patient you will have to fill out some forms about your health history and personal information.

Remember to bring your insurance card, ID and to have the date on hand of your last menstrual cycle. Completing paperwork may take some time to try to arrive at your appointment at least 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.

Ask Your Medical History

Make sure to know your medical history details before you head to your first prenatal appointment. It is important to know your medical history and even the medical history of your immediate family.

Things to know about include, high blood pressure, allergies, medication allergies, birth control methods, and the last menstrual cycle.

My doctor also asked me if my mother, grandmother, or aunts received any uterine diagnosis’. Some forms will ask you about your mother, aunts, and grandmother’s pregnancy history as well.

9 Things to expect on your first prenatal appointment

2. A Physical Exam

The prenatal physical exam is pretty similar to a routine annual GYN exam. The only difference is the tool they will use to see the baby.

The baby is not large enough yet to be seen through an ultrasound from the outside of your belly. Sooo, they will need to insert an ultrasound device internally (vaginally) to see the baby.

Now DO NOT BE ALARMED- this will be fairly quick and pretty much painless. You might feel uncomfortable and to some women, some stretching, but it will all be worth it once you see that little nugget with a heartbeat.

What The Doctor will be looking for during the exam:

The doctor will be looking for the development of the fetus, the size, and health of the uterus and most of all the baby’s heartbeat. The doctor will ensure the pregnancy is taking place where it is supposed to, in the uterus, and that you do not have any pregnancy issues.

The doctor will measure your uterus and the baby. This will also be able to tell you how far along you are!

First Prenatal Appointment | What to Expect at your OBGYN | First Trimester | Pregnancy | #pregnant #ultrasound #mom

3. You Can Bring Your Husband (or Family Member)

You can totally bring your husband or a family member to you first prenatal appointment!

My husband refused me to go to my first appointment alone. Not only did he not want me to be alone but also really wanted to see the baby!

The doctors will be kind enough to accommodate you and your husband and allow him to go to the exam with you (if you feel comfortable). I was blessed because my husband was able to come with me to every appointment and I don’t think I would have been able to do it without him.

Throughout the pregnancy, you will undergo different exams and tests and since I’m such a chicken when it comes to needles and doctors he really was able to help me stay calm and focused. There were also a couple times that both my husband and mom were able to come with me to an ultrasound appointment.

4. Blood Work

You will have to have some blood drawn for specific tests. The doctor will inform you what the blood work is for and may give you options as to what you would like to be tested for. I was able to have a blood test tell me which immunizations I have that I passed down to my daughter.

It is also important for them to have your blood type on file.

What to expect on your first prenatal appointment: 9 things

5. Urine Sample

This one is a little obvious but relevant. You will definitely have to have a urine test before every appointment from here on out.

They will confirm your pregnancy through HCG levels and will be checking for infection or proteins in your urine- which is important. It will also help you track your hydration.

6. Expect to See Your Baby!

If you are far long enough (usually after 7 weeks or so) you will definitely be able to see your baby and its heartbeat.

The doctor will be able to give you your first sonogram picture for you to swoon over and stare at for hours on end! Yay!

Pregnant Woman and Sonogram

7. Receive Your Due Date!

Based on the doctor’s exam, the last date of your menstrual, the size of the fetus, and how far along you are, the doctor will be able to give you an estimated due date!

The date may be adjusted as the baby grows but it will give you an idea of which dates your baby may be here!

8. Schedule your Next Appointment

At the beginning of pregnancy, you will see the doctor every month, then as you grow you will see the doctor every 2 weeks, and then as you get closer to your due date every week.

9. Be Encouraged!

Expect to be encouraged at your first prenatal appointment! Your doctor will give you a list of things to be aware of, which vitamins to take, and most of all how to take care of yourself so you can grow your baby healthily!

Make sure to get rest, stay stress-free, and enjoy this wonderful time!

Going to the doctor is so important, especially during pregnancy. It is imperative to keep yourself and your little one healthy.

Going to the doctor will not only make sure everything is going smoothly but if anything does happen you will always be aware of it.

Being a mom is life-changing and taking care of your baby will now always be first so be sure to make those appointments and take of yourself and your sweet, little baby!

Always With Love, Brianna

How To Find An OBGYN in 5 Steps

Pregnancy Life

How to Find an OBGYN (Obstetrician) in 5 Steps | Pregnancy | First Trimester | #pregnant #ultrasound

Inside: Pregnancy is all about keeping you and baby healthy. Find out in 5 easy steps how to find an OBGYN who is right for you, your family & your baby!

Seeing those 2 little pink lines appear on that little pregnancy test makes your heart drop. You start feeling a million different emotions and immediately start thinking about the myriad of things you have to do.

Then it hits you…you have to call the doctor!

After taking my fifth pregnancy test (yes, I took FIVE tests because I was freaking out!), I worked up the nerve to call my gynecologist to book an appointment only to find out she was a GYN and didn’t do obstetrics anymore!

Which is just a bunch of fancy words to say– I needed to find an obstetrician. And I was so overwhelmed…

But following this 5 step system made it sooo much easier! And I know it will help you too 🙂

Pregnancy is all about keeping you and your baby healthy! If you don’t have a gynecologist (GYN) that also does obstetrics (like my doctor), then you’ll have to find an obstetrician (OBGYN) for your pregnancy.

This may seem overwhelming but if you start at the right place, it’s easier for everything to fall into place.

Remember, it’s important to find an OBGYN that is right for you and that you feel comfortable with so do your research!

5 Steps to find the right OBGYN

I’ve used these 5 steps several times, trying to find the right doctor and once I did, it was like a match made in heaven. I shared these tips with my mommy & me class and all of the mommy’s-to-be had amazing success finding their dream doctors too!

1- Find The Hospital You Want To Deliver In

Let’s start at the beginning, where do you want to deliver?

Think of the closest hospitals to your house, or maybe the hospital that a family member or friend delivered in that you liked. It’s easy to only think of convenience but don’t forget to think about where you will be the most comfortable.

For me, the closest hospital to my house seemed really unorganized when I had to go to the ER one day. I didn’t want to deliver there so I ended up choosing a hospital I knew I liked that was a couple of miles farther.

Or maybe you want to deliver at a birthing center- find the place that’s right for you!

2- Find The OBGYN or Team of Doctors That Deliver at that Hospital

Most OBGYN’s have affiliated practices with the hospital they deliver at and they see the mother from their first appointment all the way up until their delivery. This way, you are with the same doctor for your whole pregnancy.

This gave me great relief knowing that I wouldn’t have a doctor deliver my baby that had no idea about my pregnancy. Sometimes your exact doctor may not be able to deliver your baby because they’re not on call at that time or working those hours but they will have a team of doctors who work with your doctor that knows you and your case.

How to Choose an OBGYN in 5 Steps | Find an OGBYN | Pregnancy Tips | Pregnancy Advice | Pregnancy Doctor | Prenatal visits | #pregnancy #newmom

3- Know Your Views on the Major Decisions

How do you feel about getting an epidural?

Are you going to try to prevent getting induced?

How important is it for you to have a natural birth?

Vaginal birth or C-section?

You don’t want a doctor who is not in agreement with your views or wishes. In other words, don’t go to a doctor that encourages you to take medication during your pregnancy if you only want to do healthy alternatives.

My first pregnancy I had a doctor who was quick to prescribe me nausea medication during my first trimester. At the time I was trying to go as natural as possible but she insisted it was best. But I wished my doctor had asked me if I even wanted nausea medicine.

For my second pregnancy, I knew exactly what I wanted and what I didn’t want so I changed my doctor. And this gave me such peace of mind.

To make your pregnancy life even EASIER, I have a resource library jam-packed with awesome free printables and resources to help you master pregnancy. Click here to get access to my Mom Treasury!

5 Steps to find the best OBGYN

4- Ask Your Husband

It’s not absolutely necessary for your husband to be comfortable with your doctor but it is nice to include him in the decision. After all, you wouldn’t be pregnant without him!

My husband appreciated that I wanted his opinion on my OBGYN. He never told me, no or yes, just simply asked me if I was comfortable with her.

It also helps if your husband likes your OBGYN because if he will be in the delivery room with you, you want to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Truth is when you are down and out or pushing up a storm, your husband can be your advocate to your doctor.

5- Ask Yourself, Are You Comfortable?

To some people comfortability is a benefit, to me, it was a necessity! Being pregnant for the first time is hard enough so you want to make sure to trust the medical professional you choose.

>> Make sure to find a doctor you are comfortable with and one that will make your pregnancy easier. Finding a good doctor may take some effort but it’s worth it!

Don’t be afraid to switch doctors if you find you don’t like them either! This is all about you and your baby’s health so do what is best for you.

Remember, even though it may be overwhelming, seeing those 2 little pink lines is one of the best feelings in the world! Don’t worry about the myriad of things you have to do. Just take one step at a time and you’ll do great!
