How to Make a Structured but Flexible Baby Schedule

One of the greatest things you can choose to do for your baby is to put them on a schedule. Not any old schedule, but a schedule that helps them eat consistently, wake at normal times, sleep better, and nap longer. I’ll show you how to create a flexible baby schedule that is right for you and your family!

A baby schedule doesn’t have to be a rigorous weight on the day, but if done right, can be flexible to your day and environment!

How to make a structured but flexible baby schedule | baby routine | How to be flexible with your baby’s schedule | How to add flexibility in your baby’s schedule | baby tips and tricks | baby schedule | baby schedule routine | free baby planner | free mom planner | #babytips #parentingtips #momlife

A flexible baby schedule is an absolute treasure because it gives you the structure of a schedule that your baby needs but also leaves room for all of the different things life throws at you each day. Such as going out, staying over a relative’s house, eating out, napping in the car, going on vacation, etc.

I define a flexible baby schedule as a schedule that your baby can stick to no matter where you go and can function the same in almost any situation.

Building flexibility into your baby’s schedule is super easy to do and will save you so much headache in the long run! Just because your baby is on a schedule doesn’t mean that your life has to be over or so rigorously planned that you miss out on life.

Your goal is to build a schedule for your baby that it goes with the flow of your life but also that is structured so you can anticipate your baby’s daily needs.

To help you start a perfect flexible schedule for you and your baby, I created the Mommy & Me All-In-One Planner! The Mommy & Me Planner has everything you need to not only start a schedule with your baby also helps you track your baby’s including naps, feedings, and playtime, AND comes with 10 different planner template pages to help you plan your personal activities, to do list and agenda!

So let’s get down to it!

How to Make a Structured But Flexible Baby Schedule

First things first, if you’re not totally convinced on WHY your baby needs a schedule, then check out my post all about the importance of a schedule for your baby and how it benefits your baby and you!

Dad and baby reading

Starting Your Schedule

The key to having a flexible schedule is to actually have a schedule. Some parents think that you make a schedule and THEN put your baby on it. But it’s actually the opposite.

To start a great schedule that works for you and your baby, you want to first document what your baby is doing and at what time each day. Do this for about 2-3 days so you can see some consistency.

Then you want to take those activities and those times and tweak them to make a schedule that works for you and your baby. Insert the times that your baby eats, sleeps, wakes and plays into a houred schedule.

For example, if you see that your baby is eating every 2-3 hours and then napping afterward and then waking to play then you want to make that into a schedule. But then you see that your baby is entering their nighttime sleep at inconsistent times.

Then, you make a schedule that will allow your baby to eat every 3 hours, ultimately ending with the last feeding being at 8pm so you know that every night your baby will be put down for bed at that same time.

You also want to make sure that you are adding in your nap and bedtime routines every day so your baby can get used to a particular routine for sleeping. Read all about the importance of nap routines and how to start one here!

Baby Napping

Spend 7 consistent days doing the schedule and routines that you found work

Now that you are starting your baby on a schedule, you want to reinforce the schedule by doing in consistently each day. It won’t be like this very long, but you want to make sure that at least for 5-7 days you are following the same schedule and routines. This will get your baby used to the times that are feedings, playtimes, and naps.

Having a schedule that is consistent will help your baby feel comforted because they know what will happen next. And it’s ultimately beneficial for you too because you can, in turn, know what to expect from your baby each day and at each time of the day!

How to Make a Structured but Flexible Baby Schedule

For each activity on your schedule, start a routine

I personally believe that routines are the main reason schedules work. Having a routine for each activity in your baby’s schedule will help your baby know that no matter where they are or what they are doing that it is time for a particular activity. This, in turn, is the lifeline for having a flexible baby schedule.

The key to adding flexibility to your baby’s schedule is having routines! There are usually 3 main activities that will make up your baby’s overall schedule: feeding, sleeping, and wake time. You want to have a consistent routine for each of these 3 things.

For example, you would want to make a solid nap routine to help your baby know it’s time to nap and a feeding routine to help your baby know it’s feeding time. Then a playtime routine to help your baby know it’s playtime and wake time. Lastly, a solid bedtime routine to help your baby know it’s time for nighttime sleep.

Baby Nap Routine

Add in one activity that you do occasionally to that consistent schedule

Because a flexible baby schedule is a structured schedule that you can do anywhere, you need to start slowly adding in different scenarios and situations to your baby’s schedule so your baby can get used to the flexibility.

Some different scenarios include napping in the car during a trip to the store, sleeping in a pack and play at grandma’s house, napping in the stroller during a shopping trip instead of napping in the crib, eating out at a restaurant, etc.

Choose one activity that you know you will eventually be doing and add that activity to your baby’s schedule. Be sure to do that same routine for the activity. For example, if your baby is sleeping over at a family members house in a pack un ay instead of a crib, make sure to do the same bedtime routine. This will bring comfort to your baby because it is something familiar to them in the midst of being in an unfamiliar situation.

I recommend you only do one a week so your baby isn’t overloaded with too many unstable environments at the same time.

Go out with your baby for playtime

Continue to add one of those activities each week

Like in the step above, you want to add one new environment or activity a week to help build flexibility into your baby’s schedule. This way, because your baby is so accustomed to the structured schedule and solid routines, they will be able to follow the schedule no matter where they are or where they go.

This can be so liberating because a lot of parents think that because you have a baby that your life is over because everything revolves around your baby. And this is somewhat true, but it doesn’t mean that you are confined to your house and stuck waiting every 3 hours to feed your baby.

Adding flexibility to your baby’s schedule helps you stay sane as well get your baby acclimated to your life. You want your baby to become a part of your daily life, not have your life completely stop just because you have a baby. Having a flexible baby schedule help you do this!

5 Common Marriage After Baby Issues and Solutions

Marriage Life

5 Common Marriage After Baby Issues

Inside: Want to find out how to solve the everyday marriage issues after baby so you can have a strong, thriving marriage?? Read on to see how you can have a happy marriage after kids!

2 weeks after I gave birth, my marriage went through a colossal change. Between the sleepless nights and fatigue, there was a lot more aimless shouting, disagreements, and stress.

Marriage after baby is like pie crust dough– delicate, fragile, stretched thin, and honestly, a little sticky. There are so many problems that can arise in your marriage after baby but your marriage life doesn’t have to be over.

Marriage after baby doesn’t have to be loveless and miserable. One of the best things you can do is to know the most common issues that can arise after kids and how to avoid them.

You can prevent arguments and disagreements by simply being aware of the most common marriage after baby issues and how to solve each one of them.

Let’s talk about the 5 common marriage after baby issues and the solutions for these everyday issues!

5  Marriage After Baby Issues and Solutions

Diy Gifts for mom 1

Your baby is first and you are not

When you get married it’s all about you and your husband. Then your baby comes and all of a sudden everything is about the baby!

One of the first marriage after baby issues you experience is the change in family focus. Your spouse may be used to being the focus of your house and then when your baby is born the baby is now the center of attention and the center of needs.

I know it sounds crazy, but some spouses begin to feel jealous of the change in focus. You begin to miss spending time with your spouse and having alone time with them.

Solution:

Come to an understanding that this is only a season and will not last forever.

It’s very easy to focus so much on your baby for so long that you realize it’s been almost 6 months since your baby has been born and you still have not paid attention to your spouse. This is when marriage after baby issues start to rise and tension increases in your home. It’s so important to remember to acknowledge your spouse. Even if you can’t give them your full attention ALL the time, you still want to acknowledge your spouse and listen to them.

2

You forget about your “wife and husband” title

Another marriage after baby issue is that you are not only just “husband and wife” but you are now “mom and dad”. When you add the mom and dad title to your family roles, you tend to forget the fact that you were husband and wife first.

You get so wrapped up in parenting and being a mom and dad that you forget about your spouse and your role as a spouse. It’s totally common and super normal- but shouldn’t become a habit in your life.

When you forget about your title as husband and wife, you tend to forget your spouse, forget their needs, and forget to communicate with them.

Solution:

Make a conscious effort to communicate and do one thing a week that you normally did before your baby was born.

Doing something together that you used to do before your baby was born will bring that “husband and wife” fire back to your relationship. It’s acknowledging that your relationship has changed but that you are still working for your marriage.

Hello Arguments

Even if you are the perfect couple and never argued, when you have a baby there tends to be this intense pressure that gets put on your marriage. And the pressure often leads to arguments and disputes. Now there is another human being to care for and it leaves room for disagreements- especially in parenting styles.

Because you and your spouse are 2 different people, there are now 2 different ways each of your take care of the baby. There are 2 different ways you change your baby, bathe your baby, feed your baby, put your baby down for a nap, and how you deal with your baby when he/she cries.

Forever and Always

You also are sleep deprived, exhausted, overwhelmed and getting used to your new life as a parent. These factors cause so much strain on your marriage because you often lose your patience quicker and it can lead to super drama.

Solution:

Always be sensitive to each other’s emotions and hear each other out

It’s impossible to avoid every single argument. Disagreements are inevitable. But what you can do is prevent disagreements from escalating into a full-blown argument by being quick to listen and slow to get angry. A lot of marital issues can be solved by being open to listening to your spouse instead of just bashing them.

Gifts for mom 4

Bye Bye Quality time

Before your baby was born you had all the time in the world to spend time with each other. Now that your baby is here, you don’t have all that quality time anymore. And for some marriages, this can really be damaging.

Quality time is so important in any marriage because it gives you and your spouse time to be with each other without distractions. It gives you time to talk, to hang out, and to just spend time together.

Solution:

Plan at least once a week to spend at least 15 minutes together.

Watch your favorite episode of a show or have some coffee and a dessert together. When you put the baby down for a nap just relax on the couch or talk about something on your mind.

Mood Ring Central

Truth is, the mood in the house constantly changes: always tired and grouchy

Where you were once living a blissful life and your home was filled with love and newlywed emotions, now your home is filled with late night feedings, sleepless nights, exhaustion, and constant adaption.

Having a baby is so wonderful and being parents is an amazing thing- but let’s face it, your house isn’t always going to be quiet and neat.

One thing that I found to be true in my marriage after baby, was that the mood in my house changed. It’s not a horrible, terrible thing- but it’s a real thing.

Solution:

When you feel like you are stretched thin and the mood in the house is really tense, take a breath and just hug.

It may sound silly but sometimes all we need is a good, deep, heartfelt hug. A hug has the power to heal so much!

Importance of Family Goals

Family Life

Why Family Goals are Important

We all make resolutions and goals but did you ever think of setting goals for your family?? Making family goals is so essential to the growth of your family!

Family goals are so important because it can bring your family closer, give you all something to look forward to, helps you keep each other accountable, and sets a great family model for your children in the future!

4 Reasons Family Goals Are Important

1. Gives Your Family Purpose

Goals are so amazing because it gives you a purpose. When your family comes together to create family goals, it gives everyone in the family something to look forward to, together.

No matter how young or old each member of your family is, you can create a goal that everyone can attain together. Whether it’s to spend more time together or to have a family night once a week, a family goal can give you all determination toward a common objective.

2. Brings you closer

When your family is working toward a purpose and common aim, it knits everyone together in a way that nothing else can. Building your family’s closeness and intimacy is so important especially for younger kids because it creates security for them.

Having a family goal that everyone is working toward can unite everyone together and has the potential to remedy any family division.

Why Family Goals are Important

3. Helps keep everyone accountable

Because family goals give your family purpose and brings you all closer, it also keeps everyone accountable. The best and worst thing about a new goal is accountability.

Accountability is the best because it you are taking responsibility for your actions and owning them. Accountability can also be the worst because if you are failing to do what you said you were then it ultimately falls on you. But when you have a family that is accountable to each other, you help each other grow and most importantly, are there for each other when you fail AND succeed.

Having family goals can create an atmosphere of positive accountability in your home and teach your family how to try again when you fail and push harder when you succeed.

Parents Spending Time With Baby

4. Sets a great model

Another great thing about family goals are that they set a great model for your family and for your children’s future. When you instill positive traditions and behaviors in your children, they tend to take those behaviors and continue them as they grow older.

Since you are operating as a united family and teaching your children to rely on each other for help, support and to help each other accomplish goals, then they will know it for themselves and hopefully share it with their future family.

How to Reach Your Goals And Keep Them

Mom Life

How to Reach Your Goals in 3 Easy Steps and Actually Keep Them!

Ever had a goal, started it, and then forgot about it?? You are not alone! The hardest part of any goal is actually going through with it. But the best way to reach your goal is to work at it daily- no matter how big or how small it is!

There are 3 ways to reach your goals fast and actually keep them: make action steps for each goal you have, create habits to help you accomplish those action steps, and stay motivated!

How to reach your goals | 3 steps to actually reach your goals fast and learn to keep them! | Reach your goals motivation | goal setting | goal planning | free printable | #goalsetting #goalplanning #goals

By doing these 3 things you can easily accomplish each of the goals you have!

Don’t forget to actually WRITE DOWN your goals! Writing down your goals is the key to success—no seriously! It is proven that you are 3 times more likely to achieve your goal is you write it down! Crazy right?!

Use my FREE #MomGoals 2021 Goal Planner to write down each of your goals you have for the year and even for each month!

Get your free goal planner now!

Let’s get down to business!

3 Ways to Actually Reach Your Goals and Keep Them

1. Make Action Steps

I feel that action steps are the secret key to reaching your goals!

Action steps are the steps or the plan of action that you will do to actually achieve that goal.

For example, if your goal is to lose 10 pounds then some of your action steps will be to cut carbs, exercise 2 at least times a week, drink more water, etc.

Without an actual plan for each goal, your goal is sure to be a bust.

To make lasting action steps for each of your goals, you want to think of the goal and think of the realistic things you have to do to reach your goal.

The hardest part of a goal is to actually keep it and do it- so to make this part easier the best thing to do is write down your goal and each step you want to take for that goal.

How to Reach Your Goals \\ Slay Your Goals!

My FREE #MomGoals 2021 Goal Planner is designed to help you write down your action steps for each goal that you have for every month of the year! Be sure to download it now!

2. Create habits

The next thing you want to do to reach your goals is to create habits that align with your goal.

To keep the same example as above, if you want to lose 10 pounds then some of the habits you would want to start is to eat out less and buy fresh food ingredients.

Your habits and action steps will begin to coincide and your goal reaching will feel less like a battle and more like a lifestyle!

[click_to_tweet tweet=”Creating actions steps and making habits to achieve your goals will help your goal reaching feel less like a battle and more like a lifestyle!” quote=”Creating actions steps and making habits to achieve your goals will help your goal reaching feel less like a battle and more like a lifestyle!”]

How to Reach Your Goals in 3 Easy Steps and Actually Keep Them!

3. Stay motivated

The next way to reach your goals is to STAY MOTIVATED! This, in my opinion, is the hardest thing to do.

You want to keep yourself motivated and on track for each of your goals. Here are some ways you can keep yourself motivated:

  • You can write motivational quotes and inspirational quotes on sticky notes and stick them your bathroom mirror or on your closets.
  • Set a reminder on your phone of some of your daily habits and action steps for your goals.
  • When you feel exhausted and overwhelmed- take a step back and breathe and know it’s okay to change some of your action steps.
  • Make a “get motivated” playlist and listen to it at least once a day.
  • Take a few minutes a day to work on your action steps. Maybe even plan out 15 minutes in your planner to focus on that goal!
  • Have an accountability partner who can help you stay on track and stay motivated!

Self-motivation can be hard but it all starts with your mindset. Keep yourself encouraged, have confidence in yourself! All success and failure start with knowing that YOU CAN DO IT!

How to Make, Keep, and Accomplish New Year Goals

Mom Life

How to Make, Keep and Accomplish New Year Goals

Inside: Want to know how to finally keep your new year mom goals? Keep reading for the ultimate tips!

Last year,  I swore I would change.

I wanted to be more energetic, more patient, more organized, and healthier.

But it was January 25th and I was sitting on my couch, completely frustrated, with dark circles under my eyes, eating Ben and Jerry’s out of the container– basically, I was still a hot mess.

It didn’t even take 2 weeks for me to forget about my new year’s goals!

But instead of feeling like a complete failure, I learned a very important lesson.

Goals are more than just writing down things that you want to do.

The key to accomplishing your new year mom goals is to make goals that are attainable, create habits that are easy to achieve, and to track your action steps and progress.

Most of the time when we want to accomplish a goal we start out strong and then slowly forget to finish or find that the goal was too hard to achieve.

But you want to create goals you KNOW you want to achieve and then actually PLAN to achieve it.

I found out the hard way that a goal without a plan is basically a wish- it only comes true unless you work for it. (Or you somehow find a fairy godmother!)

Accomplishing goals take a lot of work but you can most certainly achieve anything you want by putting your heart and mind into it!

Get my FREE #MomGoals 2023 Planner

Truly accomplish and plan all of your new year mom goals with my awesome, totally FREE Mom Goals Planner!

So, let’s get down to it and talk about the awesome step by step process of creating, keeping, and accomplishing your new year goals!

Who has some new year goals that you want to crush??

I do, I do!!

How to Make, Keep, and Accomplish Your New Year Goals

Create Awesome, Attainable Goals:

The key to actually keeping goals is to create attainable goals.

Goals that are possible and reachable.

You want to think of things that you want to accomplish this year, things that you have tried and failed at or new things that you would like to achieve. Make sure to choose goals that are actually reasonable to complete, and not things that you know would be absolutely impossible.

For example, an impossible goal would be to fly a plane- meanwhile you have no intention of ever taking a class or learning to fly. I know this sounds like a silly example, but you get the idea!
