1. Sun Block

You’ll definitely want to make sure you always have sunblock with you. It’s the first summer diaper bag essential. The sun can be extremely dangerous to babies!

The best way to protect your little one from the sun is to be generous with sunscreen. I always try to carry a tube a sunblock with me as well as a little rub on stick version. Even if your baby has a hat on, you may want to put some sunblock on your baby’s button nose or on the top of their ears.

Those little overlooked places tend to burn the fastest!

2. Bathing Suit

I know some moms who don’t always have a bathing suit on hand but I learned my lesson the hard way.

One day, as I drove home from the grocery store, Baby L saw the sprinklers in a park and went ballistic. She kept begging me to take her to the “wa-wa”. (Her trying to say water in the cutest way possible 🙂 )

So I let her run through the water with her cute jean shorts and new lace tank top!

After that, I always make sure I have a bathing suit on hand- even if I leave one in the car. You won’t die without it, but since it’s summer—it’s probably best to be safe than sorry.

Remember: Hot days = Water Play

3. Swimmy Diaper

On the same topic, if you are going to pack a bathing suit and your baby is still in diapers, you’re going to want to pack a swimmy diaper too.

I usually buy one pack and keep a couple of extra diapers in the car and one in my diaper bag. It’s always better to not need it than to need it and not have it!

Here are the waterproof diapers that I keep in the car. They come in different sizes and fit perfectly!

4. Extra clothes & Plastic bag

Having extra clothes is always a necessity! You never know when your baby is going to have an accident and you don’t want your little one to be stuck in dirty clothes…or be stuck naked.

Having an extra change of clothes is a great summer diaper bag essential. If your baby is like mine and loves running through water with their clothes on, then you’ll have an extra set of clothes.

But it’s also best if you pack a Ziplock bag or any plastic bag too. Now you have a place to put the wet or dirty clothes and it doesn’t dirty anything else in your bag.

Smart Summer Diaper Bag Essentials

Parent Tip: I usually put the clean extra set of clothes in the Ziplock bag at the bottom of my diaper bag. Then I use the clothes when needed and the put the dirty clothes in the Ziplock bag.

It’s brilliant and organizational!

5. Water Resistant Sun Hat

The summer sun is relentless. The easiest way to protect your baby’s eyes from the sun is to put a hat on him. A sun hat with a wide rim is best!

You can even find a water-resistant sunhat that your baby can wear in the water. 3 benefits in 1 hat!

6. Insect Repellant

Another Summer diaper bag essential is insect repellant. Especially if you live in an area with a lot of biting bugs!

If you’re also planning on being outside around dusk or in the evening, you’ll want to have insect repellant on hand.

I found out my daughter is allergic to mosquito bites and I didn’t even think about having insect repellant in my diaper bag. Now it’s an absolute essential.

As a bonus, you can also pack this anti-itch Benadryl stick. If your baby gets a bug bite, just rub it on the bite and your baby will feel much better. No more itching. That way, you can continue having a fun day without a cranky baby!

This is my favorite baby bug repellant. It’s organic and doesn’t have any chemicals or harmful ingredients!

7. Mini first aid kit

A mini first aid kit is a year-round diaper bag essential for me, but even more so in the summer. Since the weather is warm, your baby has fewer clothes on and their skin is more exposed. Which means and fall can result in a scrape or scratch.

You don’t have to carry around a full 50-piece, clunky first aid kit, but it’s wise to have a couple of band-aids and some Neosporin on hand.

8. Water

The heat in the summer can feel like you are wrapping yourself like a thick, scorching blanket. In some locations, the humidity alone can make you want to sprint to the nearest pool.

Babies can get dehydrated very quickly and can suffer from heat exhaustion. To prevent these very serious conditions, always carry around some water.

If your baby is not old enough to drink water, keep her hydrated with milk. (Always ask your doctor before giving your baby water for the first time.)

Bring your baby’s favorite sippy cup or bottle and have a bottle of water on hand. Make sure your little one is drinking every hour, depending on how hot it is.

Here are some awesome on-the-go sippy cups that I’ve used!

9. Snacks for energy

Don’t forget your baby’s favorite snacks to keep them energized. You’ll want to make sure your child is eating normally while they are playing throughout the day.

These are Baby L’s favorite snacks on-the-go snacks:

Never forget your Summer Diaper Bag Essentials!

Be sure to download the FREE Summer Diaper Bag Checklist so you can always be prepared and have these essentials with you. Keep it on your phone as a reminder or print it out and check it off every time you pack your bag!

So there you have it! Here are the 9 summer diaper bag essentials to help you always be prepared for your family’s adventures:

  1. Sunblock
  2. Bathing suit
  3. Swimmy diaper
  4. Extra clothes and a plastic bag
  5. Water-resistant hat
  6. Insect repellent
  7. Mini first aid kit
  8. Water
  9. Snacks

Now, when you are in the heat of the moment and rummaging through your bag grasping for sunblock, you can confidently pull it out of the pocket and give yourself a pat on the back for remembering to pack it 🙂

Stop Putting yourself Last: 5 Hacks Every Mom Needs to be Healthy

Mom Life

Find out the 5 things you need to do now to stay healthy as a busy mom!

Inside: Want to learn the key to stay healthy and focus on your self-care as a busy mom? Learn 5 easy things you can do right now to get healthy & make time for yourself without guilt!

When I was pregnant and waddling through my house grunting about how I was unable to see my feet, I vowed to be a “healthy mom”. I was determined to fit into my old skinny jeans, be able to chase my kids effortlessly, and have glowing skin that only comes from the perfect diet.

Then I actually became a mom—and all of that flew out of the window.

Why?

Because I set UNREALISTIC expectations for myself. I set these expectations before I experienced the reality of mom life.

Staying “healthy” became a long gone dream and I was solely focused on surviving. Getting through one day, turning the page, and on to the next.

How many times have you set the goal to be a healthy mom and to focus on yourself- but the busyness of mom life engulfs you?

Even though it may be HARD, it doesn’t mean it’s impossible!

The key to getting and staying healthy as a busy mom is to examine your daily routine and realistically set goals for yourself to focus on your health and self-care.

But why self-care? We’ll get into that more in a moment and talk about how your health is an extension of your self-care!

As busy moms, we don’t have the time to even think about ourselves let alone actually spend TIME doing we want to. Every mom’s routine is different. Therefore, no one can tell you the EXACT steps you need to take during your day.

But cracking down on these 5 things can help you get on the right track to focus on your health- even as a busy mom!

Mom Glow Challenge

How to stay healthy as a busy mom

Before we dive into these 5 essential things you can do, it’s important to remember that focusing on your health is focusing on your self-care. After all, your health (mental, physical, and emotional) is all a part of your self-care.

Choosing to get healthy as a busy mom, is choosing to make self-care important in your life!

1. Make it intentional

The first step to being healthy as a busy mom is to make your health intentional. And it will only take you 2 minutes to do this!

  • First, jot down what it means to you to be a “healthy mom”. This looks different to every mom!
  • Second, look at those things you just wrote and make a list of things you can do to make them possible!

Now, you’re not only saying you want to be healthy, but you’re taking actionable steps to make it a reality!

For me, being a “healthy mom” looks like this: managing my eating habits, trying to lose the extra baby weight, and staying active. The list of things I can do to make those things possible is: cut extra sugars from my diet, increase my water intake, and start completing a 10-minute living room workout that will keep me active.

Being intentional about your health with goals and realistic action steps makes “being healthy” more ATTAINABLE!

From this point on, make your health and self-care intentional. As a busy mom, your health can definitely slip through the cracks of life. But making a list and putting a “visual” to what it means to you to be a healthy mom can it makes your goal more realistic.

Therefore, more attainable!

2. Take a look at your schedule

Now that you jotted down what it means to you to be a healthy mom and wrote down some action steps, it’s time to make it a reality!

Take 5 minutes to look at your daily schedule and routines. Where can you realistically add sections throughout your day where you can focus on your health and self-care?

Maybe you can…

  • add 5 minutes in your morning to make yourself an energy/protein shake
  • add 15 minutes to your evening routine to do some quick home exercises
  • purchase a water bottle that clearly states the number of ounces you want to drink in a day
  • add 20 minutes to your bedtime routine to read one chapter a night of a book you’ve been wanting to read

Busy moms are called busy moms for a reason- because you are BUSY! But having a goal with action steps is useless if you don’t DO them.

Taking out 5 minutes right now to look at your everyday schedule to insert where you can add those action steps will be worth it!

Staying healthy as a busy mom starts with you making time to take the steps to focus on your health 🙂

Find out the 5 things you need to do now to stay healthy as a busy mom!

3. Say yes to fitness

One of the greatest things you can do for health is to keep your body moving! But the truth is, a lot of busy moms don’t have the time to even THINK about working out, let alone actually DO it.

I know for me, the moment I even think about running- I’m already out of breath! (You can tell I’m not the “let’s wake up at 5 am and run every morning” kind of mom…)

But finding a couple of minutes in your day to focus on your body will not only keep you healthy but it helps you stay in shape and has the power to give you SO. MUCH. CONFIDENCE!

I’m the laassstttt person in the world that would ever work out. I’m not only super busy all the time, but when I actually have a second to myself, I don’t even think about using it to exercise. That’s why I incorporated my fitness into my already established routine.

So instead of having to MAKE time for working out, I add it to my routine.

For example, every afternoon after my daughter wakes up from a nap I do an activity with her. We’ll play outside or color or bake something fun. But now, 3 days out of the week after my daughter wakes up, we go for a walk. And she absolutely loves it!

She sits in her stroller and plays or points at things. And if she’s restless, after every 15 minutes I’ll stop and let her walk and jump around. But then we keep walking!

I can’t even explain how much better I feel after adding an exercise to my schedule. It’s not every day- but a couple of times a week is good enough.

Finding a regular exercise schedule that works for you will help you stay healthy and feel better about yourself!

4. Create positive eating habits

The next super important thing to do to stay healthy as a busy mom is to find a diet that works for you. I’m not talking about an actual “diet”, but an eating lifestyle that is compatible with your schedule and with your family.

A lot of diets are about counting calories or adding points. Everything is about what you can or cannot eat. I found this to be unrealistic! If you’re making a meal for your family, you don’t have time to make a whole other meal for yourself.

That’s why the system I found is simple—you target a health goal and then identify a specific area in your already existing eating habits where you can make changes.

This is YOU creating a “diet” that works for YOU!

For example, let’s say you are a snacker but your goal is to lose weight. Then you target that goal by identifying that sugar is what you are going to avoid. So instead of eating that bowl of ice cream after the kids go to bed, have some strawberries. Maybe even add some sugar-free whipped cream!

Or maybe you don’t want to cut a specific food. Instead, you just want to limit your portion sizes!

Your diet and eating habits are completely up to you. Just align those eating habits with the goals and routine that you set for yourself.

Creating a diet for yourself that is more like a lifestyle is SO much easier to accomplish!

5. H2O=H2Glow

Goodbye fatigue, hello water! I had absolutely no idea what I was missing out on until I started drinking the amount of water that my body actually NEEDED.

No one ever told me the miraculous benefits of water, especially to a mom bod!

Here are some of the ah-mazing benefits of water:

  • gives you energy
  • can regulate you
  • has the ability to prevent headaches
  • help flush out toxins
  • can improve your complexion
  • helps you LOSE weight!

Most moms are not drinking enough water! Which means you are not getting your energy levels up the right way, and are not giving your body what it needs.

Real talk– sometimes we need to put down the cup of coffee and drink a cup of water…

So, the last key to staying healthy as a busy mom is to increase your water intake!

It’s easy to do, doesn’t take much time, and can be effortlessly added to your existing daily routine!

Stay healthy as a busy mom- drink more water!

A Word of Encouragement

Getting healthy and staying healthy can be really hard. Sometimes we have busy days where we can’t always eat a healthy meal. Or we get frustrated and just need to indulge in that cupcake. Or we have a million things to do and can’t find time to walk or go for a run.

Life is unexpected. As much as you plan and schedule something, things come up. Things go wrong. Don’t take it personally! Each day is a new day to start fresh and continue your goals!

It’s been TWO years since my daughter was born and I’m just now getting on the healthy train…or at least trying to (haha!). I try to find time to exercise, make good food decisions, and schedule in some “me time”. But the reality is that it doesn’t happen all the time.

Your health isn’t determined with how much you weight- but by how you FEEL.

So, take courage, you can whatever you put your mind to. No matter how busy you are! 😉

How to Beat Stay at Home Mom Loneliness

Mom Life

Inside: Do you want to find out the tried and true ways to battle stay at home mom loneliness? Great! I’ll tell you 6 ways to not only battle SAHM loneliness but also beat it!

Being a stay at home mom is like holding an umbrella in the middle of a hurricane– it seems impossible!

There’s no escaping the 24/7 spit up sweatshirt, hiding over the sink sneaking in your favorite snacks, and being in charge of your kids and household alllll day long.

Don’t get me wrong, it definitely has its rewards…but it can also get quite lonely.  I know sometimes I reaalllyyy miss working just for the socialization!

But it doesn’t have to be this way! Here are 6 ways to battle and BEAT the loneliness of being a stay at home mom!

6 Ways to Beat Stay at home Loneliness

1. Go Out More Often

I know this is really obvious, but the first way to battle stay at home mom loneliness is to actually get out of the house. Sometimes as stay at home moms, we can associate our loneliness with our home.

It’s natural because our loneliness stems from the fact that our job is staying at home.

Getting out of the house will reduce and prevent any “cabin fever” that you can easily get. Even if it’s just to drive to the grocery store or take a walk to the park. And getting out of the house doesn’t mean you have to spend money.

I know some moms who drive to target just to get out of the house but they end up spending $100 each visit because they find things that they want! If you are on a budget, know your limits.

Don’t go window shopping or to a place where you will want to spend money. It will only make matters worse because then you will be upset that you don’t have money to spend. Trust me!

Getting out of the house will benefit both you and your children! Feel the fresh air on your face and take a deep breath in.

6 tips to help stay at home mom loneliness

2. Stay connected to people you trust

Another way to beat stay at home mom loneliness is to stay connected with friends and family that you trust. One thing I know to be true is that when you become a parent, sometimes you lose some friends who can’t relate to being a parent.

But then you’ll have some friends that will stick by you through thick and thin, spit ups and all. Those are the friends you want around. Those are the people you want to stay connected to.

When you feel loneliness is starting to hit you, tell a friend or family member. You don’t have to be like “oh hey, I’m lonely”. But you can ask them to come over or to meet up somewhere for a cup of coffee.

Or even tell your friends to check up on you!

I have this friend that if she hasn’t heard from me in 2 weeks she makes it her business to text me and message me until I respond. Sure, sometimes I can be sooo busy that I get annoyed…but I know she’s doing it because she loves me and cares for my well-being.

She knows that after a while, I tend to get lonely and can easily fall into a stay at home mom “funk”.

Staying connected with people you trust will help you battle stay at home mom loneliness. Surround yourself with people who understand you and what you are feeling too!

I know you’re super busy as a mom but try to keep in contact with friends through text, email, message, and even video messages!

3. Make an effort to be social

I know, I know…one of the last things in the world I want after a long day is to be social! I’m not saying to throw on a party dress and go out every night, but try to get out once and a while with friends or family.

Don’t just go out alone—you’re alone all the time! Of course, we are not “alone alone” because we are taking care of our kids, but we can get lonely because we miss socializing with adults. Grab a friend and see a movie or go to a coffee shop.

Or if you don’t have a baby sitter, invite your friend on an outing that you are taking your kids to. Visit the zoo or aquarium or botanical garden. That way, your kids are entertained but you’re also socializing!

I have a bad habit to just burrow like a hermit crab whenever I get some free time. And sometimes being alone is good for self-care. But I also find myself avoiding socialization because I’m just too lazy to deal with anyone.

Don’t do this! It’ll just make your loneliness worse!

4. Start a journal

Sometimes when I’m feeling lonely, I like to write- and it helps! Sometimes you won’t ALWAYS have someone to talk to. And there are times that what you have to say won’t be understood.

In times like this, start a journal. Write down what you feel and what you think. And if you’re not too keen on writing, then write it out on your computer or phone.

The great thing about writing is that you don’t have to have someone read it yet you’re still talking and getting it out. It can be quite powerful!

How to beat stay at home mom loneliness

5. Confide in your husband

As much as we may feel like we are alone, we aren’t- we have our husband. Your spouse may not understand exactly what you are going through, but they can be a support and an open ear.

When you are feeling like you are lonely and there’s no one around, confide in your husband and clue him in on what you are feeling. Maybe there’s something he can do to make you feel better or maybe there’s something he can do to prevent you from feeling the way you feel.

You two are a team and when one player is down, the other gets tagged in!

Don’t go through your stay at home mom loneliness alone, tell him how you’re feeling!

6. Focus on self-care

I found the hard way that one of the causes of my stay at home mom loneliness is neglecting my self-care. When I forget about myself and the things that I need to do to keep me healthy and happy, I tend to fall apart.

What are some things that you like to do? What are something that you like to read or places you like to go? Make sure to give yourself the time you need to be happy and healthy. Be sure to keep up on your water intake too!

Spend some time each day or each week doing something that YOU want to. Whether it’s taking a long bath or visiting your favorite coffee shop or getting a manicure, or go to a book store. Focus on YOU!

How to have a strong marriage after kids

Many parents assume now that they are parents that their role and responsibility as husband and wife is void. No no no. I believe that the hardest struggle your marriage will go through is the transition from being responsible for just your spouse to now being responsible for a baby too.  The balancing act begins!

1. Be on the same team

Do not let your baby come between you. I repeat—DO NOT let your baby come between you. This doesn’t mean that you don’t love your child more than anything in the world. It just means that your baby is not the ball in a football game that you 2 are fighting over.

Choosing to work TOGETHER as opposed to against each other will keep you on the same page and in sync. This has A LOT to do with keeping your marriage strong after kids.

2. Be honest

As a parent, there are times you will be stretched so thin that your marriage will begin to be affected.

There will be times you will be so tired that you don’t even want to talk or explain yourself.

There will be times you will be so overwhelmed, all you want to do is lay down and close your eyes.

It’s inevitable!

But it’s so important to remember to be open and honest with each other. Tell your spouse how you are feeling. Tell them what you need and what you don’t need. Your spouse may not be able to fix it, but they can lend a listening ear. And when your souse is being honest with you, listen to him/her. Don’t try to fix it- just listen and be a support.

Truly being honest with your spouse will prevent those huge arguments when you feel like your pushed so far past your limit. Don’t let yourself get to your limit. Clue your spouse in on what you feel, what you need, what you are thinking, and go through it together.

3. Show affection & be intimate

Hug. Kiss. Cuddle. Hold Hands.

I know one of the most popular pieces of marriage advice is to make sure to be intimate with your spouse. But it’s popular for a reason because it’s important!

I don’t want to beat a dead horse because I’m sure you know that what you do in the bedroom often has a big effect on your marriage. But don’t forget about the other ways that you can show your spouse affection every day, no matter where you are.

Physical touch can be so beneficial for any marriage, especially to keep your marriage strong after kids. You don’t have to go crazy with PDA (public displays of affection) but be sure to show your spouse some love.

Kiss each other every day hello and goodbye. Say I love you more often. Hold hands in the car. Take 5 minutes before going to bed and just cuddle and talk. These things really do add up and make your marriage strong!

4. Make time for each other

Being a parent, your responsibility doubles. Meaning, you have more to do, more to clean, more to plan, more places to be, and so on. It can be really easy to forget about your spouse in the constant parenthood juggle. But be sure to make time for each other.

Whether you have a few minutes each day to talk or you plan a weekly date night or after the kids are sleeping you dedicate time for each other.

It’s important not to forget about your spouse. I know it sounds stupid, but you’d be surprised at how easy it actually is. You get so caught up in your kids’ life that you forget about your spouse’s life.

When’s the last time you asked your spouse how their day was or what was their favorite part of their day? Or when’s the last time you watched a movie together or cooked dinner together and had fun?

Making time for each other is another way to show your spouse that you love them and acknowledge them.

5. Fight fair

I’m just going to say it- a couple in a strong marriage isn’t afraid to argue. Why? Because they fight fair. One of the main reasons couples hate to argue is because they are afraid that they will get hurt or say something hurtful. And more often than not, the argument isn’t even productive because nothing usually changes.

Tired of arguing and it goes nowhere? Learn to fight fair. Fighting fair in your marriage will make sure that no one “wins” and “loses” in an argument, but provide a way for both of you to communicate openly, honestly, and without judgment.

6. Trust each other

A great marriage is built on trust.

A strong marriage after kids is reinforced with trust.

Trust your spouse to be a good parent, trust your spouse to tell you the trust, trust your spouse to fulfill your needs, trust your spouse to be there for you.

As a parent, you will be tired and stretched thin. You will be pushed to limits you didn’t know were even possible. You will feel like giving up. But having a trustworthy spouse and someone by your side that you can close your eyes and know that they will lead the way for you is something that is priceless.

Build your marriage on trust. And actively work on it!

7. Respect each other

You and your spouse are going through a lot. Being a present parent and being a great spouse is hard to do. Because of this, you have to respect how they are feeling and what they say. This can be reeallllyyy hard. But your marriage will benefit in such a BIG way.

Don’t underestimate how your spouse is feeling or what they are saying. Be a support to him/her. Respect what your spouse says and what they do!
